Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews praised rookie Gavin McKenna after the youngster helped the team end its three-game losing streak. McKenna scored the game-winner in Toronto’s 3-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Monday, Oct. 19.
The win improved Toronto’s record to 4-4-2 through 10 games in the 2026-27 NHL season. It also gave new head coach Jim Hiller a much-needed result after the team struggled in recent outings.
Matthews played a major role in the victory, recording one goal and two assists. However, McKenna’s performance earned special recognition from the captain.
Speaking to the media after the game, Matthews praised the rookie’s confidence under pressure.
“He’s not shy of the moment at all. You give him a little bit of time and space, like he had there, he’s going to make something happen,” Matthews said.
The captain also highlighted McKenna’s ability to move forward after difficult moments.
“Even what happened a couple nights ago, that stuff doesn’t shake him. He just keeps churning away,” Matthews added.
The victory was particularly important after Matthews had called for greater urgency from Toronto’s veterans following a 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders. The captain had emphasized that the team needed improvement across all areas, starting with himself and the leadership group.
“We need urgency,” Matthews said after the loss to the Islanders. “The games are just going to keep coming and, you know, we’ve got to just be better in all areas”

His latest performance backed up that message, while McKenna offered another encouraging sign for Toronto. The 18-year-old’s ability to stay composed could help him handle the pressure that comes with being the first overall pick.
Toronto will now look to carry its momentum into the second game of a back-to-back schedule against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Matthews’ leadership and McKenna’s developing confidence will be important as the Maple Leafs try to build consistency early in the season.
