Atlanta Bravesthird basemanAustin Riley is not playing up to his usual standard. The two-time All-Star has been a consistent piece of the Braves lineup since making his debut in 2019, but this year hasn't been the same.
In the fourth season of a 10-year, $212 million contract, Riley simply hasn't been himself. Before taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, he'd accumulated 37 runs scored, 69 hits, nine home runs and five stolen bases in 91 games. He's also slashing .210/.288/.337 for a .625 OPS.
While the Braves are currently leading the National League East, they're just three games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies. Without much room for error, patience is beginning to wear thin for Riley.

However, Braves manager Walt Weiss believes it's only a matter of time before the third baseman turns it around. During a Thursday appearance on 680 The Fan, he expressed confidence in Riley.
"There's some signs every now and then that it's going to click," Weiss said. "It's just a matter of finding that consistency... Because of the work ethic, because of the track record, I think it's going to happen for him."
Now in his eighth year in MLB, the expectations Riley holds come from his previous performance. With a career .807 OPS, he's established himself as one of the team's most productive hitters when at his best.
Atlanta will need Riley to regain his form as the season progresses. With Philadelphia refusing to back down, a turnaround from one of the lineup’s most accomplished hitters is crucial to staying ahead.
Luckily, Weiss believes it's just a matter of time. Riley will have some time to reload soon, as the Braves have their final game before the All-Star break on July 12, before returning on July 16.
