Austin Riley reached an unwanted piece of Atlanta Braves history during the final series of the regular season, becoming the first player in franchise history to record 200 strikeouts in a season.
The milestone came against the Miami Marlins, adding an unusual footnote to a year in which Atlanta secured the National League East title. Riley entered the final weekend with 197 strikeouts and three more punchouts on Saturday brought him to the historic mark.
Jason Foster highlighted the milestone on X as Riley became the first Braves hitter to reach 200 strikeouts in a season.
Riley’s 2026 season has been a difficult one at the plate compared with his previous production. Entering Sunday’s finale, the third baseman had 124 hits, 19 home runs, 72 RBIs and nine stolen bases while batting .222 with a .293 on-base percentage and .369 slugging percentage. He had 197 strikeouts through 157 games before Saturday’s three-strikeout performance.
The previous Braves franchise high belonged to Ronald Acuña Jr., who struck out 188 times in 2019. Riley surpassed that mark earlier this season before reaching 200 in Miami.
Despite Riley’s struggles, Atlanta has already secured the NL East and enters Sunday at 94-67. The Braves have also won three straight after Saturday’s 8-3 victory over Miami. The Marlins are 79-82 and have been eliminated from postseason contention.

Riley’s health has not been a major issue this season after an abdominal injury cost him much of 2025. He told MLB.com in August that staying healthy had been a major focus, particularly around his core and lower abdomen.
Now, with the division secured and October approaching, Riley’s historic strikeout total will be one of the stranger statistical footnotes attached to Atlanta’s successful 2026 campaign.
