The Athletics have suffered yet another injury blow.
On Sunday, the A’s announced that they placed outfielder Tyler Soderstrom on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 15) with a left hip impingement. In a corresponding move, infielder Darell Hernaiz was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Soderstrom, 24, was absent from the A’s starting lineup during Saturday’s 5-3 loss to the Texas Rangers. It was initially speculated to be a routine rest day for the lefty-hitting slugger with southpaw MacKenzie Gore starting on the mound, but it turned out to be injury-related.
In 109 games this season, Soderstrom has produced a .245/.338/.472 slash line with 19 home runs and 56 RBIs. The fourth-year slugger entered the weekend on an 11-game hitting streak, during which he went 12-for-42 (.286) with two home runs, five doubles, six RBIs and eight runs scored.
This is the second time in recent months that Soderstrom has landed on the IL with a left hip impingement. His previous absence sidelined him from June 28 to July 8, when he returned without having played any rehab games. He will be eligible for reinstatement on Aug. 25, but considering that this is a repeat injury, the A’s may not rush him back from the shelf.
Hernaiz, 24, has had two prior stints with the big league club in 2026. Over 134 plate appearances with the A’s this season, the versatile infielder has hit .237/.318/.288 with one home run and seven RBIs. He has made 22 starts at shortstop, nine at third base and five at second, while also filling in for two innings in right field as a defensive replacement.
In 46 Triple-A games, Hernaiz has produced a .295/.394/.399 slash line with two home runs and 23 RBIs. He is batting .366 for Las Vegas this month and went 6-for-13 over his last four games.
Injuries have taken a toll on the A’s, who entered Sunday’s series finale with the worst record in MLB at 48-75. They lost sluggers Brent Rooker and Shea Langeliers to season-ending knee surgeries, and this past Tuesday, manager Mark Kotsay indicated that Nick Kurtz is in danger of missing the rest of the year because of his injured right thumb. It was also reported Sunday that starting pitcher Luis Severino (right shoulder strain) is unlikely to return this season.
