The Athletics do not expect Luis Severino to return to the mound this season, manager Mark Kotsay said as the veteran right-hander continues working his way back from a right shoulder strain.
Severino has been sidelined since May 30 and recently resumed a throwing program. However, his current stage of the progression leaves too little time for him to complete the buildup needed for a return to the rotation.
The decision ends any remaining possibility of Severino contributing during the final weeks of the 2026 season.
Severino was placed on the injured list after leaving a May 29 start against the New York Yankees with shoulder discomfort. The Athletics later transferred him to the 60-day injured list as the absence extended.
Before the injury, Severino had made 12 starts and posted a 4.17 ERA with 65 strikeouts across 62 2/3 innings. He was one of the more experienced options in an Athletics rotation that has dealt with significant turnover this season.
The timing also limits what the Athletics can evaluate from Severino before the offseason. Even after beginning his throwing progression, he would still need to build up sufficiently and complete the necessary steps before returning to competitive action.

Severino's absence leaves the Athletics without one of their veteran rotation pieces as they look toward the remainder of the season. The club will instead have to rely on its younger pitching options to handle the workload.
For Kotsay and the Athletics, the focus now shifts from getting Severino back this year to making sure the right-hander completes his recovery and enters the offseason on a stronger footing.
