The Athletics will be without Jacob Wilson for the remainder of the season after the young shortstop was placed on the injured list with a lingering left shoulder issue.

Wilson is traveling back to Sacramento to meet with specialists after experiencing renewed discomfort while swinging. The 24-year-old had attempted to work through the problem but could not regain his full range of motion, prompting the Athletics to shut him down.

The news was reported by Martín Gallegos on X, with the Athletics confirming Wilson’s move to the injured list as he returns to Sacramento for further evaluation. The decision comes before the club’s four-game series against the Kansas City Royals and with only about a month remaining in the regular season.

Wilson’s shoulder has been a persistent concern since he dislocated it during a diving play on May 10. He missed roughly a month while undergoing rehabilitation before returning to the lineup.

The issue resurfaced after Wilson was hit by a pitch on his finger over the weekend. He subsequently experienced increased shoulder soreness while taking a swing Monday, ultimately leading the Athletics to place him on the injured list.

Despite playing through the injury for much of the season, Wilson produced a strong campaign. Through 80 games, he is batting .266 with 85 hits, 16 doubles, seven home runs and 37 RBIs across 320 at-bats.

Wilson also made history defensively during his impressive season. On Aug. 9, he recorded his 111th consecutive game without an error, setting an MLB record for a shortstop.

With Wilson unavailable, Darell Hernaiz, Alika Williams and Donovan Walton are expected to handle the middle-infield responsibilities over the remainder of the season.

Now, the Athletics will prioritize Wilson’s long-term health rather than risk further aggravating the shoulder. The organization expects he will undergo an offseason medical procedure, making the current shutdown an important step in his recovery.
