Carlos Correa’s 2026 season is officially over.
Houston Astros manager Joe Espada said Tuesday that Correa (left ankle) will not return this season, despite making encouraging strides in his rehab.
Correa has been on the injured list since May 6 due to a torn tendon in his left ankle that required surgery. The 31-year-old, however, has been ramping up baseball activities lately and was even slated for a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land. The Astros will now move forward without one of their fan favorites.
It was also Correa’s first full season back in Houston after the Minnesota Twins traded him to the Astros at last year’s MLB trade deadline.
Before Correa was shut down for the season, the Astros were reportedly mulling moving the natural shortstop/third baseman to second base if he returned this year. Correa has not appeared at the position in his big-league career.
In just 32 games this season, Correa slashed .279/.369/.418 with three home runs, 16 RBI and an OPS of .787.
For much of this season, the Astros infield has consisted of Isaac Paredes at third base, Jeremy Peña at shortstop, Jose Altuve at second base, and Christian Walker at first base.
With Correa now done for the season, the Astros are expected to roll out that regular infield amid their postseason push. Entering play Tuesday, Houston maintains a slim one-game lead over the Texas Rangers in the American League West. They’re also the only team in their division at or above .500 with a record of 75-75.
The Astros begin a three-game set Tuesday at Daikin Park against the Kansas City Royals.
