The Houston Astros only made a single major deal on deadline day, acquiring outfielder Daulton Varsho from the Toronto Blue Jays for starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti.
Despite Varsho adding depth to the outfield, Houston is reportedly still trying to add reinforcements.
According to The Athletic's Chandler Rome, the Astros are actively seeking to acquire a right-handed outfielder.
Rob Refsnyder, Austin Hays, and Jorge Soler, all of whom were designated for assignment earlier this week, were identified as potential fits.
Currently, Houston's outfield options include Varsho, Cam Smith, lefties Taylor Trammell and LaMonte Wade Jr., as well as Jake Meyers, who was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday.
The Astros also have Brice Matthews, who is currently on the 10-day injured list because of a left knee sprain. The 24-year-old has not played since July 12 but is targeting a return potentially in the third week of August, according to general manager Dana Brown.
Still, Houston's outfield remains a glaring weakness. This season, the group ranks 29th in batting average (.224), 27th in on-base percentage (.302), and 24th in wRC+ (93).
Smith has struggled to a .222 average and a .686 OPS, while the rest of the Astros' outfielders have been used in platoon roles. Furthermore, Varsho's bat has room to improve to accompany his defensive prowess.
Through 103 games this season, Varsho owns a .239 batting average and .674 OPS with seven home runs and 26 RBI.
Adding Refsnyder or Hays, both of whom have a track record of success against left-handers, could give the Astros a potential solution to their woes facing southpaws.
Refsnyder mashed left-handed pitching with the Boston Red Sox last season, slashing .302/.399/.560 with an impressive .959 OPS. Meanwhile, Hays slashed .319/.400/.549 and had a .949 OPS with the Cincinnati Reds in 2025.
As for Soler, his power and playoff success, evident in his 1.027 OPS in 30 career playoff games, are compelling. However, given that he is primarily a designated hitter, he seems less likely to be a fit.
American League MVP frontrunner Yordan Alvarez can play outfield, though his -2 Outs Above Average suggests he's better off as the designated hitter.
Nonetheless, the Astros need more production from their outfield to stay atop a tight American League West. Entering Saturday, Houston sits 1.5 games in front of the Texas Rangers for the division lead.
The Astros have won 13 of their last 16 games and continue their series against the San Diego Padres on Saturday at 7:15 pm ET.
