The Army vs. Navy college football rivalry game has been a standalone game for years.
The Midshipmen and the Black Knights have been playing on the Saturday after the conference championship games for years. Army and Navy have their own, standalone window on CBS. It's the only college football game of the day.
But with the College Football Playoff growing, there's been talk of changing that game. It's now taking a big first step toward that happening.

Army head coach Jeff Monken admitted that he is opening to moving the iconic rivalry game to earlier in the season.
The Army vs. Navy game could move to Thanksgiving Weekend, or perhaps earlier in the year, to make way for different College Football Playoff games.
The Army vs. Navy game could be moving
Thanksgiving Weekend is being eyed as the potential date for moving.
"Army football coach Jeff Monken favors moving the historic Army-Navy game to Thanksgiving weekend, he told The Athletic, a move that could free up the College Football Playoff to start a week earlier," The Athletic reported.
"The Army-Navy game has been played on the second Saturday of December since 2009 to stand apart from conference championship games. Prior to that, it was usually played the weekend after Thanksgiving weekend, protecting it from being played amid other rivalry games."
Monken is pushing for widespread changes, too, like moving the entire calendar up so the season ends on Jan. 1.
“There’s not an appetite for the college football season to go all the way to the end of January,” Monken said. “There’s a real hope that we can get this thing into one semester, and have the championship game around Jan. 1, which I think would be awesome.”
