The Arizona Cardinals most pressing Week 3 offensive task is getting wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. involved early and often against the San Francisco 49ers. Locked On Cardinals host Alex Clancy said another game in which Harrison Jr. barely factors into the plan would turn a concerning start into a much bigger issue for an offense that needs its X receiver to create space for everyone else.

Clancy pushed back on the broader panic around Harrison Jr., arguing that viral clips alone should not define the third-year receiver’s standing with the franchise. He also acknowledged that the optics have been poor after Harrison Jr. logged two targets in Arizona’s previous game, particularly because the Cardinals entered the season expecting head coach Mike LaFleur and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett to unlock more consistent WR1 production.

The solution, Clancy said, is not complicated: throw Harrison Jr. the football even when he is not obviously separated. Arizona has Trey McBride, Michael Wilson, and Kendrick Bourne available in the passing game, but Clancy argued the offense cannot reach its potential if Harrison Jr. becomes a perimeter decoy rather than a featured option.

That challenge becomes sharper against a 49ers defense the Cardinals will likely need to keep honest for four quarters. San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy has started the season in strong form, and Locked On 49ers host Brian Peacock said Arizona’s clearest upset formula starts with controlling the game script rather than allowing Purdy’s offense to build an early lead.

Harrison Jr. can help create that script. More designed looks, early-down targets, and red-zone opportunities would give quarterback Kyler Murray a needed high-upside outlet while forcing San Francisco to account for Arizona’s most physically gifted outside receiver. If the Cardinals again leave him with only a marginal role, the questions around his fit in the new offense will become harder to dismiss.

Arizona does not need Harrison Jr. to solve every offensive issue Sunday, but it needs evidence that he can remain central to the plan. A competitive road performance at Levi’s Stadium would carry more weight if the Cardinals’ top wideout is a visible part of it.

Cardinals News and Notes

– Arizona running back Jeremiyah Love gives the Cardinals their best path to changing the game script, Peacock said. Establishing the run could keep the score within one possession and limit the number of clean-pocket opportunities for Purdy.

– Cornerback Will Johnson (neck) went on injured reserve after a concerning injury, according to Clancy, while cornerback Max Melton missed practice Wednesday with a toe injury. Arizona could be forced to lean more heavily on Starling Thomas V and Denzel Burke against a 49ers passing attack Clancy expects to test every level of the defense.
