Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride has become the offense’s clearest path to staying competitive Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. With left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. (arm) out for the season, right guard Isaiah Adams (ankle) on injured reserve and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. traded to the Houston Texans, Arizona needs McBride involved early rather than waiting for the passing game to find answers.
Locked On Cardinals host Alex Clancy argued that McBride cannot simply accumulate catches after the game gets away from Arizona. Clancy said the Cardinals need to scheme their top target open from the start, particularly because defenses can now devote more attention underneath without Harrison stretching the coverage.
McBride remains Arizona’s primary receiving option, and the matchup carries more urgency after the Cardinals’ offense stalled following promising scripted opening drives in recent weeks. Clancy blamed the unit’s failure to counter opponents’ adjustments on coach Mike LaFleur and said the offense cannot afford another game in which its best playmaker becomes difficult to find after the first quarter.
The offensive line makes that challenge more difficult. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett needs a functional pocket behind a reshuffled front, while rookie running back Jeremiyah Love (ankle) was ruled out. The Cardinals signed running back Jerome Ford to the practice squad this week.
Locked On Rams host Travis Rodgers offered the counterpoint: McBride can have a productive afternoon without changing the result if Arizona cannot generate offense elsewhere. Rodgers said Los Angeles can live with McBride’s statistics as long as the Rams prevent the Cardinals from finding explosive plays or a second dependable receiving option.
Arizona also needs a pass rush capable of disrupting Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, but McBride is still the immediate test of whether LaFleur can adjust his plan to the roster he has. Getting the tight end free early would give Brissett quicker answers, reduce the burden on a battered line, and offer the Cardinals a way to avoid another chase-from-behind game.
The Cardinals face the Rams in a demanding stretch that includes games against the Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, Seattle Seahawks, another meeting with Los Angeles and the Kansas City Chiefs. A more deliberate plan for McBride is Arizona’s most realistic way to create offensive stability.
