Angel Reese did not have the best of revenge games against her old team, the Chicago Sky, on Sunday evening.
The Atlanta Dream topped the Chicago Sky, 93-91, on Sunday. However, Reese played just 20 minutes, exiting the game with an apparent injury, after posting a pretty disappointing stat line. Reese scored 8 points on 3 of 13 shooting, with three turnovers and three personal fouls. The former LSU Tigers star did add five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block.
But all in all, it was one of Reese's worst statistical games of the season. And it came at a tough time, facing the team that traded her in a surprising move this offseason.
It's been an emotional couple of days for Reese, who was called a "protected species" by Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello.
Brondello, who has coached in Australia - where the term "protected species" is used across sports for players who get alleged preferential calls from refs - and she ultimately apologized for the phrase.
However, the WNBA hit the head coach with an unpaid one-game suspension.
Reese released statement on the controversy
"First, I appreciate Sandy's apology, but I also appreciate the love and support that I've had for the last 48 hours," Reese said. "It has been very overwhelming with a lot of love and also other things. But I am grateful that the league did take action.
"There is no place for discrimination or hate in this league from anyone -- from fans to coaches to players. And I'm just grateful that we are able to move on from the situation and just play winning basketball.
"The WNBA is supposed to be positive and we are going in a great light right now, so I just want to continue that and move forward."
