Andy Robertson has explained the unfortunate effect of Diogo Jota’s death on the Liverpool squad. The former Liverpool defender said that it was a very bad experience for the new signings at that time.
Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva were killed in a car accident in Spain in July 2025, shortly after Liverpool’s Premier League triumph. The loss left the team in a state of mourning as they were also getting ready for another challenging season.
Andy Robertson Felt ‘So Sorry’ for Liverpool’s New Signings
Liverpool had a busy transfer window after winning the title in 2025. Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz were a couple of high-profile additions to the Liverpool squad in the 2025/26 season. Robertson, however, said those arrivals walked into a dressing room that was really trying to deal with an unimaginable loss.

“If I’m talking about the new signings, they’re coming into a club that is heartbroken,” Robertson explained to Jamie Carragher on Stick to Football podcast.
He added, “I felt so sorry for the new signings because they had signed and were signing for big money.”
The Scotland international said that the new boys would need months to get used to the situation at the club.
“It took them months to settle in because … grief,” Robertson said.
His remarks highlight the difficulty for players who were supposed to adjust to a new club as the team was still grieving the loss of a close friend and colleague.
Liverpool’s Grief Extended Beyond the Football Pitch
Robertson previously described how nobody wanted to train in the initial few weeks following Diogo Jota’s death.
“We didn’t care about football because you’ve just lost one of your best mates in the changing room,” he said.
Jota’s absence was felt throughout the season and Liverpool also paid tribute to him a number of times. The club later retired his number 20 shirt on all of its teams.
Robertson’s latest remarks provide yet another insight into the impact of the tragedy on Liverpool, both on and off the pitch.
