Patrick Mahomes is less than a year removed from tearing his ACL at the end of the 2025 NFL season.
Will the three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback be ready to play Week 1? The Chiefs quarterback is confident that he will be.
Mahomes said this preseason that he’s “extremely confident” he’ll play Week 1, according to KSHB 41’s Tod Palmer.
“We’re trending (in) that direction,” he added.
Mahomes, who has been making good progress in his recovery, has been able to do just about everything in practice and during training camp. He’s optimistic it’ll carry over into the regular season.
“We’ll see if I get to play then,” Mahomes said. “If not, I’m going to be ready to go for that first game of the year, God willing.”
He added: “I feel great. I’m getting more and more athletic every single time I’m on the football field, and that’s all you can ask for.”

But Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is refusing to make any predictions.

Reid refusing to make Mahomes prediction
While Mahomes is confident, Reid won’t make an official prediction.
“He’s doing great,” Reid said, via Pete Sweeney of the Kansas City Star. “We’ll just see. I’m literally taking it day by day. There are no predictions here on anything. But if the doctors and the trainers and everybody that are involved with this give him an OK — and then most of all, if he feels like he can, then we’ll address that when we get there. But other than that, these other guys are playing quarterback and doing a nice job with it.”
The Chiefs open the year on Monday night, Sept. 14 against the Broncos.
