As the Kansas City Chiefs navigate the 2026 offseason, all eyes remain on franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his recovery. Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL that ended his 2025 campaign prematurely and contributed to the Chiefs’ 6-11 record, their first losing season since 2014.
The two-time NFL MVP has been throwing and progressing in rehab, aiming to return by Week 1 of the 2026 season, though head coach Andy Reid has not given a firm timeline.
With Mahomes’ availability uncertain, the Chiefs acquired Justin Fields from the New York Jets on March 18, 2026 in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick. Fields, the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, joins Kansas City as an experienced dual-threat quarterback who can start if Mahomes is not ready.

When asked if Fields would have a significant role on the Chiefs next season, Andy Reid told The Athletic’s Jesse Newell that Fields is a legitimate backup who can win games if needed.
While not guaranteeing starter reps, the veteran coach made it clear he believes Fields is capable and more than a gadget option. Reid also joked that if Fields finds himself “bored” in practice, the Chiefs would find creative ways to get him involved.
Fields started nine games for the Jets in 2025, completing 128 of 204 passes for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception, while rushing for 383 yards and four touchdowns. His NFL career totals include 9,039 passing yards, 52 touchdowns, 32 interceptions, 2,892 rushing yards, and 23 rushing touchdowns.
If Mahomes starts the season on schedule, Fields will serve as a backup and provide depth. The Chiefs’ move ensures they have a capable quarterback ready to step in while Mahomes completes his recovery.
