The Cleveland Browns have a quarterback problem and most people around the league already know it. Deshaun Watson has played 19 games for the franchise, posting an 80.7 passer rating with 3,365 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The Browns have said publicly they still believe in his recovery but the conversation inside the building has quietly shifted toward Shedeur Sanders as the more realistic option heading into 2026.

Sanders is 24, under contract for three more seasons and coming off a rookie year that showed flashes despite the circumstances. In eight appearances, he put up 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions for a 68.1 passer rating.

He made the Pro Bowl after player withdrawals but even that footnote could not take away from what the Browns saw late in the season when Sanders finally got extended run.

ESPN's Tim Hasselbeck laid it out plainly on NFL Live. Hasselbeck's read lines up with what most analysts have been thinking. Watson's combination of injury history and off-field baggage makes it hard to build around him with any confidence.

"I think what they're gonna do is, I really don't think Watson has a shot," Hasselbeck said. "He's been away from the game for so long. He has had two Achilles injuries. I think his credibility in the locker room has been compromised because of his past. I do think there's too many things with it. And so, I think Shedeur Sanders finds himself in a remarkable position."

Sanders being a fifth-round pick doesn't change the math either. A year from now, he could be the franchise-caliber quarterback taking first-team reps in training camp.

Sanders entered the 2025 season fourth on the depth chart behind Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel. An oblique strain in August wiped out his preseason and shut the door on any early momentum.

When circumstances forced Cleveland's hand in November he stepped in and started the final seven games of the season. It wasn't a dominant stretch but it gave the Browns enough to work with.

Now Sanders is heading into a full offseason with his first NFL season behind him. He's been putting in work on his strength and conditioning and the early signs out of those sessions have been encouraging.

If Cleveland stays out of the quarterback market in the 2026 NFL draft, as expected, the competition thins out considerably.

Watson remains on the roster and the Browns haven't walked away from him publicly. But the direction is becoming clearer. Sanders isn't waiting for an opportunity anymore. It seems to be already in front of him.
