Safety Jacob Thomas went from long shot to legitimate roster piece after the Minnesota Vikings signed him as an undrafted free agent out of James Madison in April 2026. The 2025 season of the Dukes’ three-year starter included 71 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions and seven pass breakups. His versatility made him especially interesting for defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

The Vikings eventually kept him on the 53-man roster, a major jump for a player who entered the summer without a draft selection. The Athletic’s Alec Lewis described his emergence as more than a preseason feel-good story, pointing to Thomas as an important development for a Vikings safety room that lacked enough rangy options. But then the ankle injury came at the worst possible time during the Vikings’ preseason finale against the Denver Broncos on August 28.

Thomas was hurt while defending a pass on his seventh defensive play and had to be helped from the field. The injury initially looked serious enough to create concern about his roster status. Lewis reported that Thomas suffered a Grade 1 ankle sprain. A Grade 1 ankle sprain generally carries a recovery window of roughly one to three weeks, although the Vikings can adjust that timeline based on how Thomas responds.

Thomas’ availability for Week 1 is not guaranteed, although Minnesota has already protected their investment in his development by keeping him on the 53-man roster.

The Vikings Have Answers, but Thomas’ Injury Still Matters

Harrison Smith’s return gives Minnesota an immediate safety solution. Smith returned on a one-year deal worth a base value of $12.25 million, which can reach a maximum of $16.25 million through performance and playoff incentives. His experience in Flores’ defense should make the transition easier. Flores has a defense built around pressure, disguise and creating confusion for opposing quarterbacks.

The secondary now has Smith’s experience alongside younger players who have spent the offseason learning the system. Thomas’ injury hurts the depth, but it does not remove the foundation of the unit. Kyler Murray now carries major offensive pressure. The team is hoping Kevin O’Connell’s offense and a supporting cast led by Justin Jefferson can help Murray revive his career.

The Vikings’ season opener against the Packers on Sunday will be an immediate test for the team. Green Bay is also dealing with major personnel questions, including the absence of edge rusher Micah Parsons and uncertainty surrounding running back Josh Jacobs. Minnesota has a chance to start fast, even if Thomas is not ready to return.
