The Phoenix Mercury might not be playing in the WNBA playoffs, but Alyssa Thomas gave them something to celebrate after their final game of the regular season.
In the Mercury’s 100-82 loss to the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday, Thomas finished with six points, seven rebounds, nine assists and one steal. Her assist tally allowed her to finish with a total of 358 assists this season.
That sets a new record for the most total assists in a single season, surpassing the 357 assists that she achieved in 2025.
The Mercury announced the accomplishment on social media following the game.

“First she sets the record, then she breaks it, then she sets it again,” the Mercury wrote in the caption of their post. “Alyssa Thomas has set a new WNBA single-season assists record passing her own 2025 record (357).”
Thomas also finished the season with the league’s highest assists-per-game average at 8.5, ahead of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark, who dished out 8.3 assists per contest.
With that said, the Mercury star officially prevented Clark from becoming the first WNBA player to lead the league in assists while finishing in the top three in scoring.
The Fever playmaker averaged 22.3 points per game, good for No. 3 in the WNBA, behind A’ja Wilson (26.2) and Kelsey Mitchell (24.7). While she recently surpassed Thomas in assists per game, her lead didn’t last long after recording just five assists against the Washington Mystics on Sunday and only three assists in Indiana’s final game against the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday.
