The New Orleans Saints are running out of time to sort out their differences with Alvin Kamara.
Back on May 18, Saints head coach Kellen Moore said the Saints are "getting close" to figuring out their plans for Kamara. Well, it's now late June and it's still unclear if the veteran running back will be on their roster.
Kamara, who only had 471 rushing yards last season, is due $11.5 million this upcoming season. Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com believes the Saints would benefit from parting ways with their longtime tailback, especially since Travis Etienne is now on the roster.
"With Kamara out of the picture, the Saints could hand the backfield keys to Travis Etienne and give more snaps to their stable of young reserve backs, Devin Neal, Kendre Miller, and Audric Estimé. It might not be the ending either side envisioned two years ago when Kamara signed a two-year, $24.5 million contract extension. But there are certainly worse ways for a relationship to end," Duncan wrote. "But, as Demario Davis, another Saints legend, noted earlier this year, the good times only roll for so long, and sometimes it’s best to move on
Duncan also noted that Kamara's surprise appearance at OTAs was viewed as a publicity stunt behind closed doors.
Roughly 24 hours after Duncan shared this article, Kamara posted an interesting message on social mdia.
"All that salt only killin a snail…," Kamara wrote on the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Although it's unclear if this was a direct response to Duncan's article, Kamara's post has fans speculating about his future.
Will the Saints move on from a franchise legend?
Kamara currently counts as $10.4 million against the salary cap. That's a high price to pay for a player who is on the decline.
On the other hand, Kamara is beloved in the New Orleans community. He has racked up 7,250 rushing yards, 4,948 receiving yards and 86 touchdowns since joining the Saints in 2017.
The Saints are scheduled to begin training camp on July 29. It'll be interesting to see if Kamara is on the roster by then.
