I’ve been calling these sneakers the Air Jordan 12 ‘Bucks’ for too long. The Idols Become Rivals name is catchy, but we learned it too late and we can’t forget the connection to Ray Allen. The name is a Jordan Brand series concept rather than a Milwaukee licensing deal. It points at Allen coming up idolizing Michael Jordan before sharing a floor with him. The player-exclusive lineage is documented. Allen was one of five original Team Jordan signings in 1997, and the 2004 pair he wore in Milwaukee carried his name and number on the lateral heel. Retail drops those callouts and trades the gold eyelets for iridescent hardware. The blocking is the ‘Cherry’ AJ12 with Gorge Green sitting where Varsity Red did.
The best thing about this colorway is that it doesn’t try too hard to be something special. There’s great confidence in the AJ12 design and it rides the simple color blocking all the way to the bank.
