The Air Jordan 5 is hard to ruin. Almost every colorway works. Some work even better than others. The AJ5 Racer Blue is an example of maximizing the silhouette. It’s a perfect balance of uniformity and a pop of color that adds the necessary personality. Let’s talk sneakers.

The Air Jordan 5 ‘Racer Blue’ released Feb. 12, 2022, at $200 under style code CT4838-004. Its Black/Racer Blue-Reflective Silver colorway starts with a black Durabuck upper and translucent netting on the side panels and throat.
The tongue is the oversized reflective 3M version, with a blue Jumpman. The clear lace lock carries a blue Jumpman too.
Racer Blue fills the shark-tooth accents on the black midsole, and an icy translucent outsole sits underneath. Nike released the pair through SNKRS, with a separate launch page for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Jordan 5 in 1990, drawing the shark-tooth midsole from World War II fighter planes. Hatfield had also designed the Air Jordan 3 and Air Jordan 4 before it.
The model introduced the reflective tongue, the clear rubber outsole and the lace lock to the Air Jordan line. Michael Jordan wore it during the 1989-90 season, including his career-high 69-point game against the Cleveland Cavaliers in March 1990.
Black/Metallic Silver was one of the original 1990 colorways, and the Racer Blue pair works from the same black-upper template. Jordan Brand brought the original back as the Air Jordan 5 ‘Black Metallic Reimagined’ on Feb. 8, 2025, at $210.
The other original colorways were ‘Fire Red’ and ‘Grape,’ and both have returned several times since.
The Air Jordan 5 ‘Aqua’ followed a similar formula a year after the Racer Blue. It released Feb. 4, 2023, at $200 with a black nubuck upper, a yellow shark-tooth midsole and a translucent aqua outsole.
The Racer Blue sits in a run of 2020s Air Jordan 5 retros that also includes the ‘Raging Bull’ in 2021 and the ‘Green Bean’ and ‘Dark Concord’ in 2022. All of them retailed between $190 and $200.
On Sneakerjagers, the Racer Blue holds a community rating of 8.2 out of 10 across 282 votes.

You’re probably not going to find these for close to retail — although I did see a size 15 for $269 on GOAT. However, that was the price before tax and shipping. If you want em, you’re going to have to fork over $300-plus.
