Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers addressed the Pittsburgh Steelers’ communication issues leading to a heated sideline exchange between the head coach and the quarterback during Thursday Night Football.
Prime Video captured Rodgers yelling expletives toward the sideline while waiting for a play call during Pittsburgh’s opening possession against the Cleveland Browns. The broadcast then showed McCarthy appearing to respond with another expletive directed at his quarterback.
After Pittsburgh’s 27-24 loss, both McCarthy and Rodgers addressed their exchange, with the head coach saying that he regretted it.
“Communication sometimes is not the best choice of words, but everybody’s competing on the field,” McCarthy said. “I think, you know, what’s said on the field, the way I grew up in this game, you know, usually stays on the field. That’s not the case today. I understand that. But, yeah, any negative communication on my part, I wish I wouldn’t use those words.”
Rodgers wasn’t asked directly about the moment, but he pointed to the noise at Huntington Bank Field when discussing Pittsburgh’s communication difficulties.
“I mean, it was loud, it was definitely a good crowd tonight,” Rodgers said. “So some of the calls… it was hard to hear, for sure.”
Despite the early frustration, Pittsburgh completed a 17-play opening drive ending with a touchdown.

McCarthy said the communication improved after that initial possession.
“First drive was hectic,” McCarthy said. “Ended up being about 20 plays. I was talking faster than normal. I think once we settled in after that drive — which resulted in a touchdown — I thought the communication was solid.”
