If there was ever a head coach who knows how to get the most out of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, it's Mike McCarthy. Rodgers enjoyed some of the greatest success of his career under McCarthy, and McCarthy reached the highest points of his coaching career with Rodgers under center.
The two shared a complicated relationship during their time with the Green Bay Packers, but time often heals old wounds. Perhaps Rodgers and McCarthy have gained a better understanding of each other's perspectives in the years since they parted ways.
While former head coach Mike Tomlin is a future Hall of Famer, the offensive philosophy he and Arthur Smith implemented often limited Rodgers. He still made plenty of plays for the Steelers offense, but something was missing. Rodgers still possesses the arm talent, even if he no longer moves the way he once did. Too often, however, the offense confined him to quick, underneath throws. When he looked downfield, opportunities were scarce. McCarthy's offense could help unlock Rodgers' vertical passing game once again.

Rodgers, McCarthy Better Together?
Although Rodgers continued to thrive under Matt LaFleur, his best football arguably came under McCarthy. During their partnership, the Packers reached three NFC Championship Games, won a Super Bowl, and saw Rodgers capture two of his four NFL MVP awards.
Despite their success, reports often suggested that Rodgers and McCarthy did not always see eye-to-eye. The tension eventually reached a breaking point, and Green Bay fired McCarthy in 2018 after the Packers missed the playoffs for a second consecutive season.
As the years passed, however, both men consistently spoke highly of one another in public. Their comments felt genuine rather than obligatory. McCarthy reinforced that perception during his introductory press conference, where he made it clear he wanted Rodgers back. Had he felt differently, he could have offered a generic coach-speak answer. Instead, he openly endorsed a reunion.
Rodgers experienced firsthand in 2025 how much the Steelers mean to Pittsburgh. Now he has the opportunity to see just how much this job means to McCarthy.

Homecoming and Reunion
During the same press conference in which McCarthy expressed his desire to bring Rodgers back, he also spoke emotionally about landing his dream job. For McCarthy, this represents a full-circle moment and a homecoming.
What better way to continue that journey than by pairing a homecoming with a reunion? Steelers fans certainly hope this 16-year class reunion benefits Pittsburgh more than it did Green Bay.
Few people want that outcome more than McCarthy. Rodgers likely feels the same way.
Rodgers is often compared to Brett Favre because both quarterbacks own just one Super Bowl ring. Despite Rodgers' Hall of Fame resume, he would love nothing more than to add a second championship and further cement his place in NFL history. McCarthy, meanwhile, would relish the opportunity to bring a Super Bowl title home to Pittsburgh alongside the quarterback who helped define his coaching career.
