Jack Flaherty is getting closer to a return for the Detroit Tigers, with manager A.J. Hinch providing an encouraging update on the veteran right-hander before Friday’s game.
Hinch said Flaherty could begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo as soon as this weekend. The 30-year-old has been sidelined since July 21 with right flexor inflammation.
The latest development follows Flaherty’s continued throwing progression, including a live batting practice session earlier this week in which his fastball reached 93 mph. He reportedly felt good afterward.
Flaherty’s return would give Detroit another experienced arm as the season enters its final weeks. However, the Tigers will need to determine how much workload he can realistically handle after such a lengthy absence.
The right-hander was 3-8 with a 4.59 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 102 strikeouts over 86⅓ innings before going on the injured list.
Flaherty has already dealt with multiple injury setbacks this season. He previously missed time with a left peroneal strain before returning to Detroit’s rotation in June.
The Tigers could also get creative with his usage if he makes it back in September. With limited time remaining to build his pitch count, Flaherty may not immediately be capable of working deep into games as a traditional starter.

For Flaherty, the immediate priority is simply getting through his rehab assignment without another setback. A healthy return would give Detroit another option while also allowing the veteran to finish the season on the mound.
The Tigers’ current position makes the timing notable, but Flaherty’s progression remains the bigger story. After spending more than six weeks recovering from the forearm issue, he is finally approaching competitive game action again.
