When the New York Jets acquired defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat in a one-for-one trade that sent Jermaine Johnson II to the Tennessee Titans, the move was viewed as a high-upside decision for both teams.
The Jets were looking to add another disruptive interior presence to Aaron Glenn's defensive scheme, while the Titans addressed their need at edge rusher by reuniting Johnson with head coach Robert Saleh, who originally selected him in New York.
At 6-foot-4 and 366 pounds, Sweat enters his third season in the NFL with a chance to emerge as one of the league’s best young defensive tackles and become a key piece of the Jets’ defense next season.
ESPN Names T'Vondre Sweat As A Breakout Star

ESPN writer Ben Solak believes that breakout could happen in New York, naming Sweat as one of the Jets’ top candidates for such a distinction.
“The Jets and Titans executed a rare player-for-player (i.e., no picks) swap when they exchanged Sweat for edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II. This trade was largely understood from the Titans' perspective -- they had a huge need at edge rusher, and Johnson is reuniting with Robert Saleh, who drafted him in New York,” Solak wrote. “But I really like the other side of this deal.”
He adds, “Sweat is a preposterously talented athlete, with considerable explosiveness at 366 pounds. His effort wanes at times, but Aaron Glenn's greatest strength as a coach is his ability to motivate. A fire lit under Sweat could produce one of the league's more dynamic nose tackles. The flashes have been there for Sweat through two seasons as a Titan, and defensive tackle breakouts tend to come in Year 3 or 4. He's one to watch.”
Jets Address Major Defensive Need With Sweat
The Jets addressed a major need with this trade by adding Sweat. New York acquired another imposing interior presence to strengthen its defensive line alongside D players such as David Bailey, Joseph Ossai, David Onyemata, and Kingsley Enagbare.
The Titans selected Sweat in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Despite appearing in only 12 games due to an ankle injury, he still made an impact, recording two sacks, 16 solo tackles, and 34 total tackles.
Now in New York, Sweat has a chance to take the next step in his career and become a key piece for the Jets' defense.
