Troy Aikman appears to be leaving ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.” The question, though, is when will he be leaving?
The former NFL quarterback turned commentator appeared to confirm on 96.7 The Ticket in Dallas that he will not agree to a new contract with the Worldwide Leader in Sports after this season.
“There’s probably a time and a place for all that,” Aikman said, via Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t know if now is the time. I don’t know if it’s hard to figure out kind of what happened. I’ll broadcast through this season and I’ll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens. I’m looking forward to whatever the rest of this season does hold and the Super Bowl and all that and where my next landing spot may be.”

But what if things get so contentious between Aikman and ESPN, that he’s forced to leave during the middle of the season?
Who could replace him?
9 have been named options
Nine have been named options for a possible “emergency” replacement for Aikman during the middle of the season.
- Peyton Manning
- Eli Manning
- Jason Kelce
- Jason McCourty
- Kurt Warner
- Louis Riddick
- Dan Orlovsky
- Kirk Herbstreit
- Greg Olsen
Olsen would be pretty wild.
“If Olsen is truly ESPN’s top pick to replace Aikman next season, this could be the network’s ideal backup plan if it needs to (or chooses to) replace Aikman this year,” Awful Announcing shared.
Bryan Curtis of The Ringer weighed in, too.
“This probably won’t happen but it’s interesting to think about who ESPN’s break-glass replacement would be. Herbie? There’s really not an NFL bench,” he shared.
Where do you see Aikman landing in 2027?
