One reason for pessimism is the difficult schedule. South Carolina plays early-season swing games against Mississippi State and Florida. Later in the season, the Gamecocks play Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas A&M in consecutive weeks, with all of those games feeling losable.

In reality, Beamer’s job security could come under major scrutiny as early as Halloween night.

Even if Sellers gets back to his 2024 form, the unknowns across the offensive and defensive lines could make it a tough task to break into the College Football Playoff conversation.

But all good things must come to an end. Fresh off a disappointing 2025 season, the pressure is on for him and his staff to maximize Sellers and deliver this season. And while the Gamecocks will almost assuredly improve on last season’s 4-8 record, their short-term success beyond six or seven wins is far from guaranteed.

The schedule is a gauntlet. There’s a lot of pressure on Briles and new pieces across both sides of the ball. All of this might be a bit too much for Beamer to overcome.
