Fresh off a disastrous end to the Billy Napier era in Gainesville, Florida fans are eager to get back into the upper echelon of the sport’s deepest conference.
This winter, the Gators swapped Napier for former Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall, who has brought plenty of firepower and confidence with him to Gainesville. The Gators’ receiving corps might be one of the best in the nation, headlined by Dallas Wilson and Eric Singleton Jr. Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo appears to be the new QB1. Tally up a few intriguing defensive players and a workable SEC schedule, and this team has SEC darkhorse written all over it.
Swing games at home against Ole Miss and Oklahoma could determine the trajectory of the season. If Florida wins both or splits the pair, Year 1 could be something special for Sumrall and company.
Here are five bold predictions for Florida in 2026.

Florida Won't Make the 2026 College Football Playoff
There’s plenty of reason for optimism for Florida entering the 2026 college football season. The wide receiver room boasts a wealth of riches. Buster Faulkner is in at OC after back-to-back strong seasons spearheading the Georgia Tech offense. And the defense returns a ton of talent – and just might be one of the most improved groups in the country.
Despite all that, Sumrall is making a huge step up by coaching in the SEC. Philo is relatively unknown at the quarterback position. Sprinkle in the new chemistry needed for the offensive line, and there are bound to be some growing pains.
Florida has a nice 2026 schedule, and fans should feel good about making a strong step in the right direction. But the SEC is loaded, and it might be a bit too much for the Gators to make a College Football Playoff appearance in Sumrall’s first year in Gainesville.

Aaron Philo will win the Gators’ starting quarterback job
Heading into spring ball, the expectation was that Philo would win the starting quarterback job. And while he had a good spring by most accounts, so too did challenger Tramell Jones Jr.
Both have admirable qualities. Jones was a prized recruit, while Philo has familiarity with Faulkner’s system from his Georgia Tech days. The expectation all along was that Philo would be the day-one starter, and I suspect that will be the case.
One reason to be bullish on the presumed Philo appointment is his running ability. There are questions about how good a passer he is, but the loaded wide receiver room should help in that regard.
Faulkner will likely lean into Philo’s abilities as a runner and use him like he used Haynes King last season at Georgia Tech.
The Florida Offense Will Improve Vastly Under New OC Buster Faulkner
Faulkner was one of the best OCs in college football across the past two seasons, and that might be underselling it.
He turned a skiddish Haynes King and hard-nosed offensive line into a certified problem. The Yellow Jackets pummeled ACC defenses and went toe-to-toe with mighty Georgia.
This season, he’ll have a wealth of talent on his hands, and it should be interesting to see how he deploys that group. Singleton, who previously played at Georgia Tech two seasons ago, should add a new dynamic to a room that already includes the likes of Wilson and seventh-year senior Kahleil Jackson. Philo can scoot and will likely be utilized as a runner.
If the offensive line comes together, Florida has the potential to cause plenty of headaches for opposing defenses in 2026.
LJ McCray Will Have a Nice Bounce-Back Season in 2026
LJ McCray was supposed to be a star in the making. He was the No. 1 defensive lineman from the 2024 recruiting cycle from nearby Daytona Beach, and it was seen as a major coup for Florida to secure his services.
But through two seasons, McCray has failed to make an impact. He played a small role in his freshman season and missed the vast majority of last season due to injury.
The Gators return 77% of their defensive production from last season. That unit should be loaded. New defensive coordinator Brad White has plenty of new toys to play with. If McCray can finally stay healthy, he should get plenty of playing time and has all the physical tools to finally come good for the Gators.
The Gators Will Beat Ole Miss or Oklahoma
Offseason hype should always be taken with a giant grain of salt, but it’s hard to overlook Florida’s extremely workable schedule in 2026.
The Gators should cruise to 2-0 before playing host to a new-look Auburn team. Even if you’re high on Auburn, Florida should, in all likelihood, take care of business at home. Then comes one of the first key swing games.
The two biggest swing games of the Gators’ season are matchups against Ole Miss on Sept. 26 and in early November against Oklahoma. Both games are in the Swamp, which should bode well for Florida’s chances.
For the sake of the exercise, Florida will knock off one of Ole Miss or Oklahoma for Sumrall’s first signature win as the Gators’ head coach.
