The San Francisco 49ers earned a 24-14 win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday, but a big question — and potentially an even bigger personnel problem — surfaced when fullback Kyle Juszczyk suffered a knee injury in the game. Locked On 49ers hosts Brian Peacock and Eric Crocker said postgame reports indicated Juszczyk’s ACL was intact and that he could be dealing with an MCL sprain after taking a hit that hyperextended his knee.

The diagnosis and availability had not been confirmed by the team as of the postgame discussion, so the immediate issue is what San Francisco would lose if Juszczyk cannot play against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Oct. 11. Peacock and Crocker pointed to the subtler parts of head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense: shifts, alignments, protection adjustments, and the personnel looks that force defenses to account for a traditional fullback.

Juszczyk’s value extends beyond the box score because Shanahan can move him through formations before the snap and change the picture for a defense without substituting. Crocker noted an instance against Denver when quarterback Brock Purdy appeared ready to shift a replacement into position, only to find tight end Brayden Willis already aligned where the adjustment would have sent him.

Willis can fill snaps at fullback, but the role would still require the 49ers to decide how much of their usual package they can retain. Peacock said the offense loses “small things” and wrinkles without Juszczyk, a meaningful consideration before a road matchup that the hosts expect to be physical.

San Francisco showed against Denver that it can win a tighter, more physical game. The game was tied 3-3 at halftime before the 49ers took control after a third-quarter fumble, and they protected Purdy throughout a turnover-free performance. But a potential Juszczyk absence would test whether that clean approach can travel to Seattle with less flexibility in the backfield.

The 49ers’ first practice report of Seahawks week should provide some clarity on Juszczyk. His status could determine whether Shanahan keeps the full scope of his personnel menu available or leans more heavily on a tight-end-based replacement plan.

49ers News and Notes

– Peacock and Crocker credited the defense’s varied fronts for making Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix hesitate and move off his spot, even though San Francisco did not record a sack. They highlighted linebacker Fred Warner, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, defensive lineman Keion White, and defensive lineman Romello Height as players used in multiple looks.

– Peacock and Crocker also emphasized Purdy’s poise behind an offensive line that did not allow a sack against Denver. The hosts viewed that protection, along with the offense’s avoidance of turnovers, as a central reason the 49ers reached 4-0.
