The San Francisco 49ers aren't wasting time when it comes to replacing Ricky Pearsall in their offense.
According to multiple reports, Pearsall is still dealing with swelling in his knee due to a PCL injury from the 2025 season. There's some concern that he could miss the entire 2026 season, and according to reports, "all options" are on the table for the third-year wideout.
In an effort to bolster their depth chart, the 49ers have agreed to a one-year deal with Deebo Samuel that's worth up to $7 million. The former All-Pro had a great run with the 49ers from 2019-2024, racking up 5,935 yards from scrimmage and 42 total touchdowns.
Samuel, 30, spent the 2025 season with the Washington Commanders. Although his production dipped, he still had 72 catches for 727 yards and five touchdowns.
With Pearsall expected to start the season on the sideline, Samuel will most likely be the second option for the 49ers behind Mike Evans.
Perfect replacement for Pearsall?
Most of the NFL world believes Samuel will immediately help out San Francisco's offense, especially since he understands Kyle Shanahan's playbook.
"I said this in response to an individual last week, I said you wait until Ricky Pearsall gets hurt and then you acquire Deebo Samuel and that’s exactly what happened," Emmanuel Acho said. "I actually love the Niners signing Deebo Samuel, because now he’s back as a No. 2 wide receiver."
"Deebo Samuel is back with the 49ers — and at what looks to be an ideal incentive-laden price for them so that he can backfill the offense, possibly Pearsall-less, with a specialty weapon. Remember Deebo can also be a needed return man weapon," 49ers reporter David Lombardi commented.
"Niners have been suffering injuries, one right after another, with Ricky Pearsall being dealt a huge blow amidst that," one person said. "Deebo should have some nice space around CMC, George Kittle AND Big Mike Evans."
"With Deebo Samuel Sr. signing with the 49ers, Ricky Pearsall should basically be off your fantasy draft board until we know his status," another person wrote.
The 49ers will begin their season on Sept. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams.
