San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy did not need a highlight-heavy performance to make the defining point of Sunday’s 24-14 win over the Denver Broncos: he stayed upright, protected the football, and delivered two touchdown passes. Purdy completed 19 of 30 throws for 218 yards without an interception or a sack, extending his sack-free start through four games.
Locked On 49ers host Brian Peacock said Purdy’s calm operation mattered more than a flashy box score against Denver’s defense. Peacock pointed to Purdy’s pocket movement and restraint on plays that did not produce an obvious throwing window, while noting that he still found answers downfield and on late-down conversions.
Purdy’s protection has become a significant part of the 4-0 start. Tackles Trent Williams and Colton McKivitz, guards Connor Colby and Dominick Puni, and center Jake Brendel have not allowed a sack through the opening month. Locked On 49ers co-host Eric Crocker said Purdy has looked comfortable rather than hurried, a contrast that has helped the offense avoid rushed throws and turnovers.
The result gives head coach Kyle Shanahan a formula that travels: let Purdy play at his pace, avoid negative plays, and wait for the offense’s playmakers to create the decisive gains. The 49ers will take that approach into a Week 5 road matchup with the Seattle Seahawks, where maintaining the same clean pocket could matter as much as any single explosive play.
Efficient quarterback play with superior protection will keep the 49ers offense out of the kinds of situations that can quickly swing a division game.
49ers News and Notes
– Wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. added a receiving touchdown and 44 rushing yards, while tight end George Kittle broke free for a 56-yard touchdown catch. Their yards-after-catch production gave Purdy high-value plays even in a game that began as a defensive struggle.
– Fullback Kyle Juszczyk (knee) left after taking a hit that appeared to hyperextend his knee. Peacock said postgame reports indicated Juszczyk’s ACL was intact but raised the possibility of an MCL sprain, an issue that could limit some of Shanahan’s formation and motion packages if it keeps Juszczyk out.
– Linebackers Dre Greenlaw and Fred Warner led a defense that limited Denver’s running backs to 72 yards on 20 carries. Greenlaw finished with 12 tackles, and the unit’s physicality helped the 49ers turn a 3-3 halftime game into a double-digit victory.
