Heading into Week 7 of the 2026 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers look like the team to beat. A year after an embarrassing playoff exit in the divisional round, the team is 6-0 to begin the new season.
Some of that is due to better injury luck, but more of it is likely due to the play of quarterback Brock Purdy. The fifth-year man is playing like an MVP, throwing for 1,460 yards with a 14:2 touchdown to interception ratio so far this season.
San Francisco’s offseason signing of longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ wide receiver Mike Evans has also helped Purdy. The 33-year-old has played in all six games to this point, pulling in 27 passes for 420 yards and three touchdowns.
Leading into Week 6’s contest against the Washington Commanders, Evans did not practice all week with right achilles soreness. He suited up to play anyway, but left with that same injury close to halftime.
KNBR radio said that 49ers general manager John Lynch gave an update on Evans this week. Lynch said that the WR is “TBD” for this upcoming week against the Atlanta Falcons. He also lamented Evans’ toughness.
That game will take place in Atlanta this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Evans did not play at Wednesday’s opening practice due to the achilles injury. However, that does not hold much merit as an indication for his status Sunday.

Something to also consider is that the 49ers’ bye week is directly after the Falcons game. If Evans misses that game, he will have a whole three-week rest window to heal up and be ready for Week 9 and on.
If the 33-year-old cannot go at Atlanta, his club may be quite shorthanded at the wideout position. No. 2 option Deebo Samuel Sr. is presumably out for the game with a hamstring injury.
Other notable wide receivers on the roster include Brandin Cooks, KhaDarel Hodge and Christian Kirk. It will be interesting to see how the 49ers manage that room on Sunday if Evans and Samuel are absent.
