Nick Bosa’s injury status has become one of the most monitored updates for the San Francisco 49ers throughout training camp. The star defensive end missed most of last season after suffering a torn ACL, leaving San Francisco without one of its most important defensive players.
Bosa avoided the physically unable to perform list to open camp and has gradually increased his workload, giving the 49ers reason for optimism about his recovery. He also recently said his surgically repaired knee could ultimately feel better than it did before the injury.
Bosa’s latest development, however, has given the 49ers another reason to manage his workload carefully as they move toward the regular season.

Kyle Shanahan said Bosa is dealing with tendinitis in his knee. The coach described it as “a pretty normal thing with ACLs” and said the 49ers will have to be smart with Bosa from week to week (h/t Matt Maiocco of NBCS).
The update comes after Bosa missed several recent practices with soreness. Shanahan previously said he was not concerned about the absence, and the latest diagnosis does not appear to represent another major setback.

Bosa was off to a great start last season, recording two sacks through the first two games, before suffering the injury in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.
He has been open about the work behind his recovery. He recently explained that doctors addressed chronic tendinitis from a previous ACL injury while repairing his latest tear, something he believes could help him feel faster once he completes his rehabilitation.
The 49ers appear to be erring on the side of caution and will prioritize getting Bosa ready for the games that matter instead of rushing him through August. The 49ers will kick off the first of three season games on Thursday before their Week 1 opener against NFC West rivals, the Los Angeles Rams, on Sept. 10.
