The Chicago Bears are looking to bounce back in Week 6 after a disappointing loss to the Packers, but they’ll face another challenging test on the road against the Atlanta Falcons. With both teams hoping to get back on track, several intriguing storylines could shape Sunday’s matchup, from a potential showdown between two first-round quarterbacks to a battle between talented backfields.
Beyond the individual matchups, both teams have questions to answer on defense, potentially setting the stage for an offensive shootout. Meanwhile, Bears fans could make their presence felt in Atlanta, just as they did the last time Chicago visited Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2022.
Here are four thoughts ahead of the Bears’ Week 6 matchup against the Falcons.
Battle of 2024 First-Round QBs

If Caleb Williams and Michael Penix Jr. are both available, Sunday could deliver a long-awaited showdown between two quarterbacks selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Both were top-10 picks and represent important pieces of their respective franchises’ futures. Williams, of course, has already made a significant impact by leading the Bears to the playoffs.
When healthy, Penix has shown that he can live up to his draft position. Atlanta’s offense has looked dangerous with him back under center, giving the Falcons another dimension heading into this matchup. If both quarterbacks take the field, Sunday could mark the beginning of an intriguing rivalry between two young signal-callers.
Who Has the Better Running Back Duo?

The Bears have an excellent running back tandem in D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai. However, Atlanta’s backfield, featuring Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr., is just as dangerous as any duo in the NFL. The two aren’t related, of course, but their shared last name and first initial make for an amusing coincidence.
Some might argue that Bijan does most of the heavy lifting for Atlanta’s backfield. That’s fair. He’s also one of the NFL’s top running backs, so it’s only natural that he commands the lion’s share of the workload. Robinson Jr. still gives the Falcons another option, though, making this an interesting comparison.
Both teams have the personnel to establish the run and take pressure off their quarterbacks. The question is which backfield will make the bigger impact on Sunday.
A Shootout Feels Inevitable

Both teams have shaky secondaries, even with talented safeties in the mix. Atlanta and Chicago have dealt with questions at cornerback related to both injuries and on-field performance. Those concerns could create opportunities for two offenses that feature plenty of talent at wide receiver and tight end.
Could we be in for an old-fashioned shootout? The game doesn’t necessarily need to turn into the kind of high-scoring affair we saw in Monday night’s Bills-Rams matchup to live up to that billing. A 34-28 finish would be entertaining enough, but a 52-45 shootout isn’t entirely out of the question if both defenses struggle to get stops.
Chicago Faithful Will Take Over Atlanta

Tork Mason/Green Bay Press-Gazette
I was there the last time the Bears visited Atlanta in 2022, and the Chicago faithful made their presence felt. The only other fan base I’ve seen invade Mercedes-Benz Stadium to a similar degree was Steelers Nation. Bears fans showed up in force and made themselves heard from the opening moments.
Ultimately, Atlanta spoiled the trip for many Chicago fans with a 27-24 victory. Still, seeing the classic Mike Ditka outfits, Walter Payton jerseys, and hearing those unmistakable Chicago accents made the experience memorable.
Bears fans travel well, and there should be every expectation that they’ll take over Atlanta once again on Sunday. Even with the team coming off a disappointing loss, Chicago’s traveling faithful could provide a home-like atmosphere for the Bears as they look to get back in the win column.
