On paper, the San Francisco 49ers have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. With stars like Christian McCaffrey, Mike Evans, Fred Warner, and Nick Bosa, it's hard not to see this team as a contender in 2026.
However, every team, including the 49ers, could use some more reinforcements. The 49ers don't simply want to be a playoff team, they want to go all the way. The roster doesn't have many holes, but they could look to patch a few places.
Today, let's identify four remaining free agents who could interest the 49ers.
G Kevin Zeitler
Kevin Zeitler is probably the best interior offensive lineman left in free agency. Zeitler spent the 2025 season with the Tennessee Titans and had another solid season. Zeitler earned a solid 74.5 PFF grade, which ranked 13th out of 81 qualified guards.
Zeitler remains unsigned, and the thinking is that he wants to join a contender. In that case, the 49ers are the perfect option. The 49ers have a three-way competition going on at left guard, and if none of the trio impresses, Zeitler would be a perfect plug-and-play option.
RB Miles Sanders
The 49ers have one of the best running backs in the league in Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey played all 17 games in 2025, but if he misses time in 2026, the team doesn't have a great option.
Jordan James and rookie Kaelon Black are the current top backups. It's possible the team could prefer to add a veteran with some more experience just as an insurance policy. Miles Sanders is a one-time Pro Bowler who has 56 starts under his belt in the league.
DT Foley Fatukasi
The top of the defensive tackle depth chart is set with Alfred Collins and Osa Odighizuwa. However, the room isn't particularly deep, with rookie Gracen Halton, second-year player C.J. West, and a couple of undrafted free agents representing the depth.
West has had some rough days at camp, so it's not hard to imagine the team wanting more depth. Foley Fatukasi remains a free agent, and he has 64 starts under his belt. Fatukasi doesn't offer much as a pass rusher, but he's a reliable run stuffer and a nice veteran presence.
S Taylor Rapp
The 49ers have one starting safety spot secured by Ji'Ayir Brown. The other spot is more questionable, though, as Malik Mustapha is banged up and Marques Sigle is coming off a down year.
If the 49ers don't like the idea of rolling with one of those two, Taylor Rapp is worth a call. Rapp has 72 starts in his career and 12 total interceptions. The safety is also familiar with the NFC West, having played the first four years of his career with the Los Angeles Rams.
