While Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns were destroying the Texas State defense in their home opener, the extreme heat in Austin, Texas reportedly sent multiple fans at the stadium to the hospital.
Taking to X, Hunter Schuler of Texas State shared a photo of fans effectively sheltering inside of Darrell K. Royal Stadium to avoid the sun. Schuler claimed to have seen paramedics in the building bring out at least four stretchers for fans that he dubbed “heat casualties.”
“So many heat casualties at this Texas State vs Texas game. I haven’t seen anything like this in a long time. Already seen paramedics bring 4 stretches in and it’s still Q1. People are huddled in the stadium like it’s a hurricane shelter. 2:30pm kickoff is a certified disaster,” Schuler wrote.
Fighting The Heat
Over the past week there was no shortage of discourse over whether fans (specifically USC fans) should brave the extreme heat at some stadiums to see teams play. After this report, the ones who believe it’s not worth it got a lot of extra ammo to work with:
“It’s called karma. Same people pissing at USC fans for not showing up to a game with 100 degrees and humidity in LA,” one user declared on X.
“USC fans knew a football game wasn’t worth heat stroke,” wrote another.
“This is why you don’t blame fans who don’t want to sit in the blazing heat for four quarters,” a third remarked.
“Heat kills. It needs to be taken seriously.”
“Conferences have to negotiate with television in September in the South. This is a health issue.”

As for the game, the Longhorns made quick and easy work of the Bobcats, beating them 59-7 in what was essentially a tune-up game for next week’s even bigger game against Ohio State.
Hopefully the temperature will be far lower because the attendance is likely to be way higher.
