The 2026 fantasy baseball season is not even a week old and – despite the accusations of early overreaction – it might be The Year of the Rookie.
Chase DeLauter, Kevin McGonigle, JJ Wetherholt and others have captured the attention of their hometown teams. The rookie class is delivering early results that are already reshaping fantasy teams.

Eleven rookie hitters and six pitchers have contributed positive WAR grades (0.1-0.6). We will monitor the rookie cohort all season but fantasy owners want answers now, so we’ll tell you who we are most confident can repeat their week 1 performance all the way through September.

McGonigle’s Explosive Debut and Immediate Fantasy Value

Why He’s Already a Must-Add in Most Leagues

McGonigle has been hot out of the box, hitting .333 with 5 RBI and 4 runs in five games for Detroit. He owns identical 14.3% BB and K rates, demonstrating a good eye and bat control. He has not demonstrated the impressive power he owned in the minors, but that should arrive soon.
He is not swinging quite as often as we saw in the minor leagues and he’s not chasing pitches out of the zone much, so we can guess that he is soaking it all in. If McGonigle is available in your league, make a hefty investment in acquiring him. HRs and SBs should come soon and when they do, he will help your fantasy team.

Patience Required or Immediate Adds?

Chase DeLauter not only hit 2 HR in his first (regular season) MLB game, but hit HRs in his first three games. While he is an immediate add, even if you stash him, he might have a longer learning curve than most rookies. The five-tool talent has not reached even 250 plate appearances in any season as a pro, with injuries sidelining him every year along the way.

Aside from the HRs he has not done much, walking just 4 percent of the time and striking out 30 percent. Obviously small sample sizes at play, but never let power numbers fool you into not looking under the hood. I would roster DeLauter (if you don’t someone else will), but be wary of injuries and don’t assume across the board production right away.

JJ Wetherholt is a bit of a different story. Atop the Cardinals lineup, Wetherholt seems to be a spark plug for a team that needs one. He’s hitting .300 with 1 HR, 4 RBI, 4 runs and a stolen base. With a low (13.8%) K rate and an 8% BB rate, he’s demonstrating good patience and will play every day out of the leadoff spot. Another rookie I would add if available.

JJ Wetherholt’s contact skills and lineup role provide stable runs and average with modest power-speed contributions.

2026 Fantasy Baseball Rookie Debuts: Broader Class Impact

Other Prospects to Monitor and Roster Implications

Two pairs of rookies have led the class so far in the first week. Sal Stewart’s 0.6 WAR leads all rookies for the Reds while Owen Caissie has a walk-off HR to his credit so far. Non-traditional “rookies” Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto are already offering power to their fantasy baseball.

Murakami has 3 HR, 4 RBI and 5 runs to his credit in 5 impressive games for the White Sox. Okamoto, playing north of the border, boasts a pair of HR, 3 RBI and 4 runs to go with a .300 batting average. Okamoto has a high 39.1% K rate but also a high .444 BABIP, so we’ll know more about him in the coming weeks.

Caissie has the HR to go with 6 RBI and a .400 average in Miami. Stewart has a pair of HR, a cartoonish .563 average and 1.125 OBP in 5 games. His production will obviously level off, though fantasy owners hope the power continues.

Other notables so far: Carson Benge of the Mets, TJ Rumfield of the Rockies and Tristan Peters of the White Sox. Keep your eyes on Justin Crawford of the Phillies, Moisés Ballesteros of the Cubs, and Samuel Basallo of the Orioles.

Oh, and MLB’s No. 1 prospect, Konnor Griffin, is tearing up AAA pitching so far, so expect him very soon to supplant the SS position in Pittsburgh.

Andrew Painter Leads Rookie Arms in 2026 Fantasy Baseball

Pitchers are harder to get initial reads on in fantasy baseball, but fans in Philadelphia were thrilled with the long-awaited debut of Andrew Painter. He struck out eight hitters, allowing one run on four hits and a walk in 5.1 innings. He sported a fastball averaging almost 97 mph and a nice variety of pitches overall. Painter is probably available in your league and won’t pitch again until April 6 or 7, so you might be able to claim-and-stash him, but he appears to be ready for the bigs.

Remember, Nolan McLean of the Mets is also a rookie. He has sported ace-level stuff so far, but much like his World Baseball Classic outings, the desired results were not there. He should be rostered in your league. If he’s not, go grab him.

How Should Managers Handle These Rookies in 2026 Fantasy Baseball?

Rookies are unpredictable for sure, but so far this season, the newbies are holding their own. In today’s game, many of the mentioned players will have every day, or every fifth-day turns with their clubs. Availability is an underappreciated skill, so many rookies are worth taking a chance on in fantasy baseball.

Be patient, be smart and don’t go overboard. Rostering rookies is not for the faint of heart, so know the entire talent pool for Plan Bs. But it’s a long season, and if you don’t act now, many prized rookies will be gobbled up by other owners more willing to inherit the unknown.
