Now that we’ve had 10 full days, end-of-game situations in MLB bullpens are becoming clearer. As we told you would happen, the closers flipped in Pittsburgh and Kansas City, but little else has shifted dramatically.
A note that has nothing to do with fantasy baseball: Congrats to Rays closer Pete Fairbanks and his wife for the impending birth of their child. Lydia is due to induce labor on Monday morning and that is way cooler than even a fantasy baseball championship.
Let’s go to it heading into Week 2.
Reviewing the Categories
Our Closer Confidential groups closers, and committees, into three cohorts:
Secure: 90 and Above - Low-to-no risk; good results, strong underlying statistics
Shaky: 80-89 – Some doubt exists, often with inconsistent supporting skills/stats
Seesaw: 79 and Below – Committees and closers in trouble. 9th inning is (or should be) in doubt.
Secure Closers

Because this group is so secure, I made only two 1-point adjustments to this group: I bumped Mason Miller up a point because he was just so dominant in Boston over the weekend. I also dropped Bryan Abreu a point, and thus, out of the secure cohort, due to inconsistent performance. He remains talented but without pure strikeout stuff, he might fluctuate between groups in the periods he is the Astros closer. Meanwhile, we received news that Josh Hader would not face hitters until “mid-April” meaning Abreu will be closely watched this month.

Shaky Closers

Ryan Helsley continued a strong run as the O’s closer, but as a bitter Mets fan I’m gonna sit him in the shaky group at least one more week, because memory is difficult to override. But he has looked good….If you want a cheap save or two this week, Calvin Faucher should slide into the Marlins 9th inning role for 2-3 days if Fairbanks goes on the paternity list. I wouldn’t but help yourself…..Daniel Palencia earned his first save and was nasty on Sunday. He could move up this board soon, but one save is one save….Ryan Walker is not faring well so far. I continue to believe he’s the best option in that pen but I’m not as high on him as I was in the spring…..I’m also lower on Jeff Hoffman than I was in the spring, but because I wasn’t as high as others, I won’t make a big deal out of dropping him down this list. Abreu, technically is in a closer-by-committee situation, but I’ll believe it when I see it. If this week shows that to be true, he’ll be adjusted yet again next week.

Seesaw Situations

I might reconfigure this column to make seesaw closers the top group and put the secure guys down here, because there is so much to talk about…..Estévez is out (due to injury) for now in KC with Erceg taking the 9th inning role. I don’t love Erceg, but next man up and all that…Jordan Romano is the closer in Anaheim…..I don’t love Romano, but…. Gregory Soto supplanted Dennis Santana in PIT (I told you so). I don’t love Soto, but I like him (despite his Mets tenure)…..Griffin Jax is making it hard to believe he’ll stay the closer in Tampa Bay, but Garrett Cleavinger going on the IL will buy him more time. But it’s like a slow-motion car crash….. In the least surprising bullpen change in baseball, Ryne Stanek, who is a nice bullpen arm, has lost his “closer” role to Riley O’Brien. Repeat after me. I don’t love O’Brien, but the job is his to impress me…. In Chicago, I do love Grant Taylor who should be the 8th inning guy, but they insist on using him as an opener. I think he eventually closes for the Pale Hose. Even as an opener he will collect 2-3 Ks in one inning, so if that helps, let him help. He’s got a great arm…..I’ve designated Trevor Megill the Milwaukee closer. Which, of course, means Abner Uribe will get the next game-closing opportunity.
