One person is dead and dozens more are injured following a "horrific" college baseball team bus crash on Wednesday.

The 2026 college baseball season is getting ready to begin. Teams are starting to play scrimmages and exhibition games with the regular season scheduled to begin for some earlier this month.

Tragedy struck one program in Iowa on Wednesday.

A bus carrying the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team crashed on Iowa Highway 4 near 220th Street, just west of Twin Lakes in Calhoun County. The crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. local time.

Iowa State Patrol officials confirmed to KCCI that one person died in the crash. Dozens more have been injured. The victim who died has yet to be identified.

Officials confirmed that 33 people were on board the bus when it crashed.

"The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority," the Iowa Lakes statement said. "The College is actively supporting those affected and communicating directly with families."

Iowa Lakes began the season on February 6. They were scheduled to play a series against North Arkansas College in Harrison, Arkansas this weekend.

"Our hearts are heavy as we grieve alongside the Iowa Lakes College community. The loss of a life is a tragedy that reaches far beyond one campus. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who passed away, and we are lifting up in prayer those who were injured and all who are affected. During moments like this, we are reminded that the higher education community is a family, and we stand ready to support Iowa Lakes Community College in any way we can.”

The conference is deeply saddened.

"The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference and our members are heartbroken to learn of the bus accident ... Our thoughts and prayers are with the student-athletes, coaches, staff, families, and the entire Iowa Lakes community during this incredibly difficult time."
